This incident, the latest in a string of escalating violence targeting aircraft in Haiti, has prompted major airlines to suspend their services to the troubled nation.

The Spirit Airlines plane, carrying over 100 passengers, was approaching Toussaint Louverture International Airport when it was hit by bullets, according to reports. Passengers recounted hearing a loud bang and witnessing the pilot immediately abort the landing. The aircraft circled back to Fort Lauderdale, where it safely landed without further incident.

"We can confirm that our Flight 204 from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Port-au-Prince (PAP) on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, experienced a mechanical issue requiring a return to FLL," Spirit Airlines stated in a press release. However, the airline did not specify the nature of the mechanical issue, leading to speculation that the company was downplaying the severity of the incident.

This incident follows several other attacks on aircraft in Haiti in recent weeks. In June, a private plane was forced to make an emergency landing after being hit by gunfire, while a United Nations cargo plane was also targeted in a separate incident.
